Rediscover STEAM

Story

Natasha Matta founded Rediscover STEAM in the summer of 2020 because she says: “ I never saw someone that looked like me represented in the STEM fields in the media or news, or in my science classes. The only women scientists we learned about all year were Rosalind Franklin and Marie Curie. I wanted to uncover the hidden history of women and other gender minorities in STEM and the arts.”
Natasha wants to empower herself and other young women to break that glass ceiling. What started as a passion project blossomed into Rediscover STEAM.

Rediscover STEAM is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and publication that sheds light on the often overlooked and untold stories of gender minorities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and the arts throughout history to increase representation and diversity in the fields and bridge the gender gap. We aim to rewrite the false narrative that gender minorities cannot be successful in male-dominated fields and to share stories from a diverse set of backgrounds, so that everyone can find someone whose experiences and identity resonate with them. We make an active effort to highlight women of history of different races, ethnicities, cultures, sexualities, religions, socioeconomic levels, and other identities. New articles are up every Saturday.

As to date they have collectively published over 80 articles on Medium and expanded beyond a publication to a student-led organization and international community. Some of their other initiatives include the annual Women In Engineering Summit, mentorship program, takeovers, and a resource hub.
