Astronaut Food

Wit-Bit

In today’s post, I will be explaining how to make cinnamon apple chips, and what kinds of foods astronauts can eat in space!

For the cinnamon apple chips, you will need: 1 apple, cinnamon, and sugar.

First, preheat your oven to 200℉. Take your apple and cut it in half. Remove the core, and carefully slice the apple into thin slices. The thinner the slices are, the more crunchy the apple chips will be! Place the apple slices onto a pan covered with parchment paper.

Next, mix some cinnamon and sugar together. Lightly sprinkle the mixture onto the apple slices. Put the pan in the oven for 1 hour. After that, take the pan out of the oven and let the chips cool. If they are still soft, put them back in the oven for additional time. Just like that, we have made yummy cinnamon apple chips!

Now… what does this have to do with Astronaut Food?

Well, food contains a lot of water. Due to this, food can be very heavy, which would add additional weight to the spaceship! To avoid this, astronauts take dehydrated foods with them on their space missions. By dehydrating food, you are taking the water out of the food. This significantly reduces the weight of the food and saves space! So, when we put the apples in the oven, the water was extracted, and we got crunchy chips!

Just like that, we made a snack that even astronauts can eat in space! To learn more, check out StemChef’s “Astronaut Training” Escape Room!
